about

This is a very famous Samoan folk song. Used a lot for traditional dance. I’ve had the melody of this song in my head for my whole life. Although I never knew the words, when mum showed me for this recording it was like I re-discovered something I already knew so well. After I read the lyrics once, it was like I automatically knew the song again. Love singing this one.

From Foloi
The Samoan Teacher's Training Cultural Group performed this classic song beautifully, a favourite amongst Samoans to perform the 'siva'. "Ie lavalava" is a Samoan sarong, something we wear daily. Among other deeper themes, this song celebrates the beauty of Samoan Culture as expressed in the design of the clothing. This has got to be one of the most if not popular Samoan song ever written. A source said that apparently the Marist Brothers in Samoa wrote it back in the early 1900s.

lyrics

Amuia lava o peau o le sami
E aga' I sisifo e aga' I sasa'e
A e leiloa mai lou tino a mate
Ma lou fatu e momomo
Le aulae I au amio e feolo
A nei a malepe si a ta so ma si a ta so

Ia lavalava teuteu fa’asamoa
E sulu le siapo e maeu e maeu le manaia
Ia lau penina ma lau pa'aga ua malie o
Sau ia ua ou le toe fai loto
O le a seu lo'u vaa e malolo
Lafo Ia le taula I fanua ua leva le po

Ia faatalaia, Ia faatalatala
Aumai se tala mai le ualesi e
Le ua fo'i mai, Lau malaga
Sa e ta’amilo I a Samoa

English translation
Blessed are the waves of the sea
They go west, they go east
If only they knew how tired my body is
And my heart feels anguish
Because of your behaviour
Hopefully our union will not be severed
The decorated Samoan designed cloth Wearing tapa,
so very, so very beautiful

My jewel and my treasure, so perfect
I rest my case and have no more thoughts
My ship will be rested
I cast the anchor to land as the hour is late
The chattering, the nagging Bringing a story from the wireless
You have returned from your trip
You travelled around Samoa
